Jon Taffer relaunched The Abbey Pub as The Green Room at The Abbey.

The Abbey Pub, relaunched as The Green Room at The Abbey, closed in 2015 after a fire gutted the building, which the Looney family had sold earlier that year. A dispute with the new owner over repair costs prevented the family from reopening.

What happened next

The Abbey had been three months from closing when it was rescued, and it traded successfully for several years afterward. In 2015, the Looney family sold the building to raise money and negotiated a lease with the new owner. Later that year, a fire gutted the bar and forced its closure; the fire and the burned-out building were featured in a Back to the Bar episode. The Looneys demolished the damaged interior with plans to rebuild, but became involved in a legal dispute with the building's owner over repair costs, and the bar never reopened. Owner Tom Looney died in July 2022. A new, unaffiliated Abbey later opened at the same location under different investors.
